I'm an audio engineer. I've spent most of my career making records, mixing sessions, and building stuff in studios. But that's the music side of things.
I started messing with AI video about a year ago. Runway first, because that's what everyone was using. Then Kling came out and the results were different enough that I needed that too. Then Higgsfield. Before I knew it I had three or four subscriptions running at the same time, paying over $100 a month. Half my credits would expire before I could use them.
The thing that bothered me is that these platforms are reselling AI models you can access through an API for way less. They put a UI on top, charge you monthly, and add credit limits so you feel like you need a bigger plan.
I also write software. So I built the app I actually wanted. A desktop app where you plug in your own API keys and pay providers directly. No markup. Or you can use credits if you don't want to deal with keys. You buy it once and it's yours.
It's got a real timeline editor, storyboarding, Kling 3.0, Veo 3.1, Nano Banana, FLUX, and more. You can export to MP4 or send markers straight to DaVinci Resolve, Premiere, or whatever editor you use. It's actual production software, not a web page with a prompt box.
I looked around before I started building and couldn't find anything like it. BYOKList.com tracks 50+ bring-your-own-key apps. None of them are for video. So that's the gap Slates fills.
There's no venture capital behind this. No board. I built it in the Comox Valley on Vancouver Island and I'm the only one working on it. If you request a feature, it goes to me. If you find a bug, I fix it.
We've got 65 customers so far. Small, but we just got started. If you're paying monthly for AI video tools and it doesn't sit right with you, give it a try. 30-day money-back guarantee. If it's not for you I'll refund you myself.
